A structural engineer is a Professional Engineer and includes the designation of P.E. after his or her name. Before becoming a P.E., an engineer must successfully complete 4 to 6 years at an accredited school of engineering plus 2 to 4 years practical experience working under the supervision of another person who is already a Professional Engineer. A passing grade must also be achieved on a two day examination administered by the state issuing the license.

There are many types of Professional Engineers including chemical, nuclear, aerodynamic, petroleum, mechanical, civil and others. A structural engineer concentrates on the mathematical analysis of buildings, bridges and other structures and has taken college courses specific to that discipline. Unfortunately, some Professional Engineers in other disciplines offer their services as structural engineers even though they do not have the proper education or experience.

Why hire a structural engineer? ...

Structural engineers have the knowledge to determine the causes of the structural problems you are experiencing with your home or building and the best remedies for those problems. Except for architects, no other professional or craftsperson has that knowledge or license.

Contractors know best how to implement the repairs but are not well-qualified to determine the cause or the best remedy. Also, they are often not in an impartial position, as they are selling the methods used by their company.
